Program Description:
A thirteen-month fellowship training experience is offered to Otolaryngology graduates who are not fully prepared to manage patients with chronic ear disease, otosclerosis, hearing loss requiring implanted devices or complaints of vertigo, vestibular migraine or complex otologic problems like superior canal dehiscence and atypical otologic manifestations of migraine. I believe these concerns can be fully addressed with one additional year of training in a busy otologic practice with a preceptor who has proven teaching ability and is dedicated to creating a rich otologic training experience. Although there will be some exposure to neurotology and skull base surgical procedures, this is not an accredited Fellowship for those services. One half of graduates from this program continue in Academic medicine.
The clinical work in this Fellowship will be conducted primarily at the ChristianaCare Health System, a 1000 bed Level 1 trauma center situated in northern Delaware, south of Philadelphia and northeast of Baltimore. We serve a general population of 1 million from Delaware, Southern New Jersey and peninsular Maryland.
Pediatric cochlear implantation is performed at the Nemours duPont Hospital for Children, a regional pediatric care center affiliated with the Department of Otolaryngology of Thomas Jefferson University and has rotating residents. My expectations are that the clinical Fellow in otology will participate in and conduct some of the monthly otology conferences provided to the Jefferson Otolaryngology residents. These cover a very wide range of topics, and will challenge the fellows’ knowledge base and presentation skills.
The clinical fellow will participate in all surgical cases in a practice limited to otology. Annual caseload is approximately 225 cases. The Fellow will see new balance patients independently and establish diagnoses and treatment plans.
Participation in clinical research with publication is expected. While I do not require that Fellows entering this program are dedicated to a faculty academic track, I do expect the participation of Fellows who are personally dedicated to practicing otology at a high level.
