Program Description:
A twelve-month fellowship training experience is offered to Otolaryngology residency graduates who want additional operative experience managing patients with chronic ear disease, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, cochlear implants, bone conduction hearing devices, Eustachian tube dysfunction, CSF leaks, and skull base lesions. There will also be additional clinical experience with vestibular testing, Meniere’s disease, complex benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, persistent postural perceptual vertigo, vestibular migraine, superior canal dehiscence syndrome and atypical otologic manifestations of migraine.
There are three preceptors who have diverse background and training. Although there will be some exposure to neurotology and skull base surgical procedures, this is not an accredited fellowship for those services. Applicants who would like to pursue careers in private practice and academics are welcome.
The clinical work in this Fellowship will be conducted at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the associated outpatient surgery center with a minority of cases at Golisano Children’s Hospital. We serve a population of patients including all of Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania.
There are weekly conferences with residents and faculty in the department of otolaryngology. It is expected that fellows will participate in grand rounds as well as journal club and our temporal bone lab.
The clinical fellow will take call, participate in clinic and surgical cases focused on otology. Annual caseload is approximately 225 chronic ear cases, 100 cochlear implants, 70 bone conduction hearing devices, 70 stapes, and 50 middle fossa cases.
Participation in clinical research with publication is expected. Fellows entering this program are expected to be personally dedicated to practicing otology at a high level.
